You enter as one person and separate as an altered version. The wisdom you gain, the lessons you learn, and the experiences you get to be part of, they all impact you. But what happens when the uniform comes off, the dog tags are placed in a box, and the DD 214 becomes your proof of service…

During the military-to-civilian transition, many will give advice focused on job placement. But the reality is, you’re not just leaving your job, you’re leaving a lifestyle. Here are 21 lessons from my reflections since separating from the military:

  1. Self-Discovery is going to be the KEY to your civilian life: Had I known the importance of knowing who I am and what I want, I wouldn’t have spent so much time running from my true self. I had spent four years in the military and most of that time it was being complacent and following the rules. At some point, I believe I got disconnected from my true wants and desires, and when I got out, I didn’t take the time to reconnect with myself, I just focused on surviving.
